Pelham’s Kate Douglass working towards Tokyo Olympics

PELHAM, N.Y. (BVM) — Pelham swimmer Kate Douglass has set herself up for an appearance in the Tokyo Olympics after strong finishes throughout her week at the Olympic Trials.

Douglass has made a name for herself during her time down in Omaha after a second place finish in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:09.32 and a third place finish in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 56.56. She will likely join fellow UVA teammate Alex Walsh who won the 200-meter event on Wednesday.

The Pelham native had a starstudded career at Pelham Memorial High School, leaving the school as a New York high school record holder in the 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle. Her success during high school has continued during her collegiate career as she continues to dominate at the University of Virginia.

Douglass capped off her sophomore season with the Cavaliers on a high note, racking up a list of achievements. The eight-time All-American shined throughout the 2020-21 season, winning an NCAA individual title in the 50-yard freestyle, while adding two second place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly. She has also gone on to set program records in five different events this past season.

Douglass will have another opportunity to win on Saturday in the 50-meter freestyle and is still looking to officially lock up her spot in Tokyo. The winner of each race automatically qualifies for the upcoming Olympics, but even without a win, Douglass will still have a great chance to make the team with various swimmers qualifying in multiple events.
