Kent Denver two wins away from fourth girls soccer state title

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (BVM) — Kent Denver School has won three state titles in the history of its girls soccer program and a fourth is within reach. The undefeated Sun Devils (10-0-2) are just two wins away heading into Wednesday’s Class 3A state tournament semifinal matchup with Jefferson Academy.

Kent Denver, seeded No. 1 in 3A, beat No. 16 seed Alamosa 10-0 in the first round of the tourney and then shut out No. 8 Lutheran 2-0 in the quarterfinals Saturday to make it to the semis. The Sun Devils have been dominant all season long, having scored 66 goals while giving up only four. Junior Izzy Newton leads the team with 11 goals scored and fellow junior Maria Romo-Nichols is right behind her with 10.

The semifinal matchup with the No. 4-seeded Jaguars figures to be Kent Denver’s stiffest challenge of the postseason so far. The two teams met in the season opener May 4 with the match ending in a draw. The Jaguars have been ranked No. 1 in Class 3A since mid-May and seemingly picked up where they left off two springs ago when they finished as the state runner-up after winning it all in 2018.

The Sun Devils are shooting for their first state title since 2016. They captured their first two championships back-to-back years in 2006 and 2007.
