Mahtomedi baseball wins state

MINNEAPOLIS (BVM) — On June 18, Mahtomedi high school baseball faced off against Grand Rapids in the MSHSL Class AAA state championship. When it was all said and done, the Zephyrs had won their second-ever state championship by a score of 20-3.

The 20 runs and 17-run margin of victory are both state records that Mahtomedi now holds. The Zephyrs had15 hits, 13 walks and three hit-by-pitches to get the 20 runs that ended the state final in six innings.

Heading into the sixth inning, the Zephyrs were only up 10-3, but that is when their bats got hot. Fourteen batters scored 10 runs in the inning to solidify their first state championship since 2018.

Mahtomedi entered the state tournament as the No. 3 seed after winning the Section 4AAA championship, beating Hill Murray twice. The Zephyrs then faced Sauk Rapids-Rice in the state quarterfinals and Sartell in the semifinals, winning the games 2-0 and 7-0 respectively.
