Holy Family’s Jessica Mason runs away with state title

AURORA, Colo. (BVM) — Only three subpar rounds were recorded over two days of the CHSAA Class 4A girls golf state tournament, and Jessica Mason had two of them. The Holy Family junior dominated the competition at Commonground Golf Course, shooting a 3-under-par 69 on Monday and following that up with a 1-under 71 on Tuesday to run away from the field by 10 strokes and capture the state championship.

Mason extended Holy Family’s run of individual titles to four consecutive seasons, following former Tiger Hailey Shalk, who won three straight from 2017-2019 and would’ve had a chance for a fourth straight if the COVID-19 pandemic hadn’t forced the cancellation of the 2020 season.

Mason’s highlight of day two came at the 451-yard, par-5 No. 11 hole where she barely missed a rare albatross (3-under par) by inches before settling for a tap-in eagle that pushed her to 6-under par for the tourney. Mason’s two-day total of 140 was well ahead of Mullen’s Sofia Choi (150), who took second place after matching Mason’s day two score of 71. Emily Chang (152) placed third individually and led Discovery Canyon to the team championship. Holy Family placed fifth as a team.
