Doersching eyes shot with Cowboys

Editor’s note: The San Diego Padres selected LB Griffin Doersching with the No. 240 pick in the eighth round of the 2022 MLB Draft on July 18.

STILLWATER, Okla. (BVM) — The MLB Draft is right around the corner. For many prospects, it’s an exciting time. One of those prospects hoping to hear his name called is Griffin Doersching.

Doersching started his collegiate career with the Northern Kentucky Norse in 2018. During that season, he batted .243, hit 13 home runs and had 49 RBIs. Putting up those kinds of numbers, Doersching earned prestigious awards such as Horizon League Freshman of the Year.

He was also named to the All-Horizon League First Team, All-Horizon League Freshman Team and the Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American Team.

Doersching followed up his impressive freshman year with a statistically similar sophomore season. In 51 starts for NKU, he once again hit 13 home runs and had 44 RBIs.

“Griffin is a power-hitting first baseman who will fit into the middle of the lineup immediately,” former Norse head baseball coach Todd Asalon said in a release. “He has strength and power that you just can’t teach. He is also an outstanding defensive player and is rated Wisconsin’s No. 8 player by Prep Baseball Report and No. 363 in the country.”

Also, in 2019, Doersching had the opportunity to participate in the College Home Run Derby. Doersching won the event with 51 home runs. That included a 463-foot home run that left TD Ameritrade Park.

Following his impressive sophomore season, Doersching and his teammates would only get through 17 games before the COVID-19 pandemic cut the baseball season short. He started in 16 games and batted .242.

After the shortened 2020 season, NKU was able to play 48 games in 2021. Although the team finished with an overall record of 17-31, Doersching had himself a career season. Doersching set NKU’s all-time single-season home run record with 20 and drew 50 walks which is also a single-season record at NKU.

Doersching also dropped his strikeout percentage to 15.3%. Through his first three seasons, Doersching was averaging a strikeout percentage of 28.7%.

“I am so proud and excited for Griff,” current Norse head baseball coach Dizzy Peyton said in a press release. “He put forth a lot of effort improving his game. He has definitely earned this honor and is well deserving. Griffin has been a great role model both in our baseball family and for future Norse on and off the field. You couldn’t ask for a better teammate, leader or person than Griffin Doersching. He will be greatly missed by myself and the rest of our family for sure! We are so excited to see what the future holds for him.”

After his career at NKU, Doersching decided to join the Lakeshore Chinooks. It was his second tenure with the Chinooks. This season he is batting .255 with eight home runs and 19 RBIs. Those eight home runs currently lead the Northwoods League (NWL). With those home runs, Doersching also became the Chinook’s all-time home run leader with 17. He passed Lucas Raley (14), who set the record in 2015.

Doersching will aim to continue to lead the Chinooks in hitting this year. But as he aims for another college season thanks to COVID-19, he will play baseball elsewhere. He announced on June 24 that he would be joining Oklahoma State. There he will be joining former Chinook teammate, Jake Thompson.

“I love that kid,” Doersching said.

Along with former teammate Jake Thompson, Doersching will also be working with hitting coach Robin Ventura and another former big-leaguer, Matt Holliday.

“My main reason for going to Oklahoma State was the coaching staff,” Doersching said. “I’m excited to work with Coach Ventura.”

The Cowboys finished with an overall record of 36-19-1. Now, with power hitter Doersching joining the team, the Cowboys will be looking to reach the College World Series for the first time since 2016.

“[My goal] is to win [at Oklahoma State],” Doersching said.
