Bouncing back: Cary softball’s year in review

CARY, N.C. — Imagine finding out the game you just played would be your last, regardless of the amount of games scheduled in the weeks to come. That’s exactly what happened to countless sports teams in March of 2020. The loss of a full season, rules against physical proximity, and decreased numbers in participation are all Covid-19 related effects many sports teams have had to overcome this year.

Despite the year of challenges both on and off the field, the Cary High softball team was able to continue moving forward with their goal of being more competitive and making it into post-season play. “We worked with the difficulty of Covid-19 restrictions and wearing masks and turned it into an eventful and memorable season,” said sophomore outfielder Isabella Bascom. The Imps finished the season as 2nd place in the Tri-8 Conference with an overall record of 9-4, earning an automatic bid for the NCHSAA 4A State Playoffs and continuing the program’s positive trend.

“Coming into the season, many of us weren’t sure what to expect. It was incredible how well we bonded and competed as a team,” reflects sophomore shortstop Kathryn Mohler. This season has shown the relentless and determined spirit of the Imps. “I will always remember the feeling of coming back to win multiple games in the final innings,” said senior outfielder Colleen Quinlivan.

The Imps benefited from a strong defense and secured a few wins in walk-off fashion. In only 74 total innings of play, the three-member pitching staff, made up of junior Ashley Emory, junior Rachel Smith, and freshman Mackenzie Goodloe, was responsible for 101 strikeouts. This trio maintained composure and brought stability and consistency to the field, even against the toughest of competitors. Senior Meagan Clark and Rachel Smith lead the team with batting averages over .500, and combined, they collected 40 hits on the condensed season.

“It’s inspirational to watch this team bounce back after losing their season last year and not knowing if we would even play this year. These athletes have persevered and continued to make positive strides in the program,” admires Assistant Coach Coleman Tyrance, “Much of their hard work has been rewarded.” Cary Softball was well represented with post-season awards.

Meagan Clark, Rachel Smith, Ashley Emory, and junior Rachel Oates all received 1st Team All-Conference honors, and Kathryn Mohler received honorable mention.

Additionally, Rachel Smith was named the Softball Conference Player of the Year, marking the first time a Cary High athlete has received this award in well over a decade. Smith quickly shares credit with her teammates saying, “[Softball] is a team sport, not an individual one. My teammates make me a better person and athlete…”

Given the uncertainty coming into the season, these athletes were undeterred, built resilience, and experienced success. The support from the school and community motivated the players and helped make the 2021 season memorable.

Cary High softball held a portion of tryouts and indoor practices at, and is a proud partner of, Diamond & Aces Sports Center.
