Michaela Meyer will continue to chase her dreams after being one spot shy of the Olympic team

SOUTHBURY, Conn. (BVM) — Michaela Meyer was .16 seconds shy of qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics in the women’s 800-meter run. Meyer, a 2016 Pomperaug High School graduate, came in fourth place at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Team Trials earlier this week.

She finished a footstep behind Ajeé Wilson who earned her spot on Team USA. Although Meyer will not book a ticket to Tokyo, she did still run an impressive race. She ran a personal record of 1:58.55 after sprinting past three others in the final 200 meters.

“Leaving Hayward Field with absolutely no regrets,” Meyer wrote in her Instagram post at the conclusion of the Trials. “I am beyond grateful for my family, friends, coaches, teammates, and everyone else who has made this track and field season the best one of my life so far. This is not the end, but the beginning of a new chapter.”

This truly is only the beginning for the champion runner. Two weeks ago, Meyer won the NCAA championship in the 800m and became the first woman in the University of Virginia’s history to win a national title in track and field. She ran a then-personal best of 2:00.28.

Within a two-week time frame, Meyer improved her 800m time by about two seconds. At that rate of improvement, there’s no doubt that she’ll be footsteps ahead in the years to come.

“Can’t wait to keep chasing my dreams,” she wrote on her Instagram on June 30.
