Satellite HS boys and girls reach podium at FSHAA state track and field meet
SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. — The SHS Boys and Girls Track and Field teams finished strong at the FSHAA 2A/4A State meet held at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville on May 8th. The Boys team finishing 2nd, missing first by just 5 points. Congratulations to the 4 x 800-meter relay team, Graeme Burns, Josh Stern, Gabe Montague and Joe Wester. They ran 7:58.86 and are this year’s State Champions in that event.
Joe Wester and Gabe Montague are SHS Seniors and finished individual State Champions in their events. Joe, who has committed to UF at Gainesville ran a 1.54.99 in the 800-meter. Gabe ran a 9:15.87 in the 3200-meter and will attend Furman University the fall.
The girls team finished 16th in the State led by Julia Lavrador’s 2nd place finish of 5:04.62 in the 1600-meter and Emma Terry who finished 3rd in the Javelin throw event. Julia is a Senior and has committed to the University of Florida.
Even with all the uncertainty in the beginning of the season, 2020-2021 turned out to be a great year for the Track and Field and Cross Country teams for Satellite High! Through it all, Coach Butler watched over the teams, providing guidance and support to each athlete along the way. It is evident that he is respected by the entire team, parents, and his peers. Coach Butler’s enthusiasm in the spirit of the sport is ever ending! Up next for Coach Butler is hosting the AAU Track Club Nationals at Satellite High July 12-17. They are expecting over 3,000 athletes from around the U.S. to participate and volunteers are needed and welcomed.
