Greenwich HS girls swimming team acquires new head coach for 2021-22 season

GREENWICH, Conn. (BVM) — Brendan Heller was recently named as the new head coach for the Greenwich High School girls swimming and diving team. For the 2021-22 season, Heller will have big shoes to fill as he takes over a program that has had great success over the past several years.

The former Greenwich HS head coach, Lorrie Hokayem, led the team to back-to-back Fairfield County Interscholastic Conference (FCIAC) championships in 2017 and 2018. In 2019, the girls finished in second at the FCIAC championships, but were unable to redeem themselves during the 2020 season after the meet was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Heller will soon take over to help the team earn their conference title back. The former DI swimmer from Bryant University has over six years of coaching experience. According to his LinkedIn profile, he is coming from Sacred Heart University (DI) where he was an assistant swim coach.

Prior to being in that position, he was at Carnegie Mellon University (DIII) where he served as an assistant swim coach for both the men’s and women’s teams. While there, he helped to qualify 24 students for the 2020 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships.

Heller also has a fair share of experience coaching high schoolers. Starting in 2016, he was the head varsity swim coach at Iona Preparatory School. Within his two years of being with the program, Heller was named the New York Catholic High School Athletic Association Division II Coach of the Year.

Soon, he’ll get back into the groove of coaching high school swimmers. With his many years of advanced coaching experience, he is sure to be an impressive addition to the team at Greenwich.
