Alameda native Bryan Woo gets drafted by Seattle Mariners

ALAMEDA, Calif. (BVM) – Former Alameda High School standout Bryan Woo heard his name called during Monday’s MLB Draft. The Cal Poly redshirt sophomore pitcher was taken 174th overall in the sixth round by the Seattle Mariners. The selection extended Cal Poly’s streak of having at least one player drafted every year since 1999.

Woo was 2-2 with a 6.11 ERA and one save during the Mustangs’ 2021 season. He struck out 42 batters over 28 innings and made 10 appearances, including two starts, on the mound. Perhaps his best showing of the season was 5 1/3 innings on March 21 at CSUN in which he struck out seven batters and didn’t allow a single run.

The former Alameda star had another strong showing on April 11 at Long Beach State where he fanned eight batters over 5 2/3 frames in another scoreless appearance. Woo was one out from finishing that game before injuring his right elbow and being sidelined for the remainder of the season. He’s slated to have Tommy John Surgery, but the Mariners appear to care more about Woo’s mid-90s fastball that tops out at 97 mph.

Woo was named West Alameda County Conference MVP after his senior high school season when he led the Hornets to a 27-2-1 record and the CIF-North Coast Section Division 2 championship.

Cal Poly continues to churn out MLB-level talent as now 73 Mustangs coached by Larry Lee over the last 19 seasons have signed professional baseball contracts. A total of 34 Mustangs, including Woo, have been drafted in the top 10 rounds during Lee’s tenure.
