San Jose State strengthens QB room with transfer of Jalen Hamler

SAN JOSE, Calif. (BVM) – San Jose State football will welcome a new face to its already impressive quarterback room in the fall. Jalen Hamler announced his decision to join the Spartans on Twitter after starting all 11 games at QB for Cal Poly in 2019.

Hamler took over the starting role for Cal Poly as a redshirt freshman while utilizing a run-first option offense. He completed 62-of-108 passes for 1,167 yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions to go along with 522 rushing yards and another nine scores on the ground. Despite the productive individual season, Cal Poly went just 3-8.

The Mustangs wouldn’t take the field again until the spring of 2021 with a new head coach and a more traditional offense. Hamler initially started the shortened spring season, throwing for 357 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in the team’s only three games, but Cal Poly reportedly had plans to move Hamler to a new position: safety. Soon after, he entered the NCAA Transfer Portal.

The early indication is that Hamler will stick as a QB for the Spartans and join a strong position group.

Returning All-Mountain West quarterback Nick Starkel led the Spartans to an undefeated regular season, their first Mountain West Championship title and first ranking in the final AP poll since 2012 (No. 24) in 2020. Junior QB Nick Nash, who has played in 14 career games, redshirt freshman Natano Woods and walk-on sophomore Matt Der Torossian each return for SJSU. The Spartans will also welcome three-star true freshman Walker Eget for the 2021 season.

Hamler will have as many as three seasons of NCAA eligibility still to use.
