Canisius’ McMillan choses to stay close to home

BUFFALO, N.Y. (BVM) — When Canisius rising senior Nik McMillan makes the switch to the collegiate level, he’s not going to have to travel very far. The Crusaders’ star wide receiver announced his decision recently to continue his football career at the University at Buffalo.

“After consulting with my family, I am blessed to announce I’ve committed to the University at Buffalo,” McMillan shared on social media.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound wide receiver caught 18 passes for 373 yards and five touchdowns during the Crusaders recent spring season. The production from McMillan during the shortened season powered the Crusaders to a Monsignor Martin High School Athletic Association championship in 2021.

In his sophomore season, McMillan racked up 662 yards on 41 catches, reeling in five touchdowns during the Crusaders 12 games. The breakout season would once again lead Canisius to a championship, this time for the New York State Catholic Athletic Association title.

“I would like to first and foremost thank God for this opportunity to continue my passion in the game of football,” McMillan shared. “My mom has been my No. 1 fan since the beginning and I would like to thank her for everything she is to me and continues to be. I would also like to thank my dad for continuing to push me and giving me sound advice when needed. Thank you both for believing in me.

“Next, I would like to thank the Canisius High School football staff and all my teammates for all you’ve done for me over the years. All the hard work we’ve put in together prepared me both physically and mentally to succeed at the next level.”

After offers from Akron, Central Michigan and the former Buffalo coaching staff, McMillan decided to stick with the Bulls’ program, with new head coach Maurice Linguist honoring his scholarship offer.

A change at head coach won’t just happen at the next level for McMillan, who will play for a new head coach during his senior year at Canisius. When he closes out his final high school season, McMillan will join an up-and-coming class under Linguist.

The rising senior won’t have much of an adjustment to his future home.
