Daeshun Ruffin stays in-state with Rebels

JACKSON, Miss. (BVM) — New year, same result for Daeshun Ruffin. After a shortened 2020-21 season, Daeshun Ruffin was a awarded Gatorade Mississippi Boys Basketball Player of the Year for the second year in a row.

“Daeshun Ruffin is an exciting player and high-energy point guard whose specialty is scoring and shooting,” ESPN national recruiting director Paul Biancardi said in a Gatorade press release. He thrives in the open floor for easy baskets.  He can be a big disruptor on the defensive end when he picks up a ball-handler in the backcourt. An ESPN 100 prospect, he’s a dynamic player and will be a crowd favorite at Ole Miss.”

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound senior point guard led the Callaway Chargers to a 10-1 overall record this past season. He also averaged 33.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists and helped the Chargers reach the quarterfinals of the Class 5A state playoffs. Ruffin was also named a McDonald’s All-American and invited to the Allen Iverson Roundball Classic to go along with his impressive senior season.

Along with his play on the court, Ruffin also did impressive work off the court. He maintained a 3.11 GPA in the classroom and also helped volunteer at a local summer camp.

Not only will Ruffin have the chance to play in his home state, but he will get to play for one of the best college basketball coaches, Kermit Davis. Davis has been the Rebels head coach for three years and has 504 career victories over his 25 seasons as a head coach.

Ruffin also finds himself among some of the top college prospects. According to ESPN, he is the No. 1 player in Mississippi. He’ll aim to prove that ranking as he looks to help the Rebels improve upon their 16-12 overall record from a season ago.

At a very young age, Daeshun has a boatload of potential. It’s going to be challenging at the next level, but exceptional players step up when the moment is at its biggest and that’s what Ruffin can do at Ole Miss.

“It just gave me that home feeling – the fan base is tremendous,” Ruffin said in a tweet. “I’m just ready to get there.”
