Phillips Exeter’s Dominick Campbell lands with Notre Dame

EXETER, N.H. (BVM) — When Dominick Campbell took his visits this summer, he was the only recruit to head to South Bend in an official capacity. When it came to his final decision, it was an easy call to commit to the Irish program.

“Proud to announce my commitment to Notre Dame,” Campbell shared on social media. “Special thanks to my mom, dad, brother, grandparents, coaches and teammates for helping me along the journey!”

The rising senior repeated his junior year of high school last year at Phillips Exeter Academy, and was unable to play the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Campbell will suit up for Exeter for his first time this upcoming season after last playing in a high school game at Waynflete School. Campbell averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds in his last season back in Maine.

Without a high school season, the 6-foot-9, 235-pound forward impressed throughout his time on the AAU circuit, playing for the Middlesex Magic in Massachusetts. After originally holding scholarship offers from a list of smaller Division I programs heading into the year, Campbell was able to make waves during an AAU weekend down in Texas where he averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The big week would end with a whole new list of offers, including his future school in Notre Dame. After offers from schools like Boston College, Providence and Virginia Tech, the decision to join the Irish program came after Campbell mulled his 21 total offers.

The rising Exeter senior becomes the fifth Notre Dame commit and will join an Irish team that is still gathering its upcoming rosters based on changing eligibility. The decision to join the Notre Dame program continues the pipeline for Coach Brey, who has done well gaining recruits from the Middlesex Magic. Magic head coach Michael Crotty Jr. coached both former guard Pat Connaughton and current guard Cormac Ryan.

“Mike Brey and Notre Dame have a long history of recruiting New England, both in the state of Maine and the Middlesex Magic program,” ESPN’s Adam Finklestein said. “Campbell gives them a skilled big man with true inside-out tools. He makes threes, can be physical inside, and has soft hands.”

With a long time off from his last high school action, Campbell will be looking to continue his success from the AAU circuit during his upcoming senior season.
