LSU commit Walker Howard wins Louisiana Gatorade award

LAFAYETTE, La. (BVM) ― Whenever Walker Howard takes the field, his team has a better chance of coming away with a win. Now, with one more year left at St. Thomas More High School, the 2020-21 Gatorade Louisiana Football Player of the Year will be looking to have another successful season.

“Walker was special,” Westgate High School Head football coach Ryan Antoine said in a Gatorade press release. “He is a true quarterback. He can do it all―run, throw, he’s accurate, he can read a defense and he’s savvy. He had a huge impact on their success.”

At 6-foot-1, 185 pounds, Howard has continually shown that he has one of the top arms in the Class of 2022. As the Cougars’ quarterback, Howard threw for 3,430 yards and 39 touchdowns. Last season, one of his best performances came in the Division II state championship game against De La Salle High School, where he threw for 381 yards and four touchdowns.

It was a rematch of the 2019-20 state title game where St. Thomas More handled De La Salle 58-10. This time around, it happened to be a closer game. St. Thomas More would come out on top this time by only seven points. Along with another state title, Howard was voted 2020 MaxPreps State Player of the Year and voted Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 4A Outstanding Offensive Player.

Following the state championship in 2020 and during the 2020-21 season, Howard had more time to focus on school and other off-field priorities. Throughout his three years of high school, he has maintained a B average in the classroom.

Along with his work in the classroom, Howard has also found time to give back to the sport he enjoys playing so much. He continues to volunteer in his community as a youth football coach and continues to grow the game of football.

Howard still has one more year of high school left before he leaves for college. He was drawing interest in his whole prep career but decided to stay in his home state and play for the LSU Tigers.

“I’m all into LSU. LSU is home,” Walker said in an interview with Off the Bench.

Walker Howard is one of the most talented athletes in Louisiana. He continues to work hard on his craft, and it shows. Now, with his junior season behind him, the No. 2 quarterback in the nation will be aiming to lead the Cougars to the top once again before he suits up in the purple and gold.
