Branson Robinson commits to Georgia

MADISON, Miss. (BVM) — 2022 five-star running back Branson Robinson has committed to play football at the University of Georgia. Robinson had a plethora of power-house programs to pick from, including Alabama, Auburn, Clemson and LSU. But in the end, it was Georgia’s history of great running backs that swayed him towards the school.

“That was a big part,” Robinson said in his interview with CBS Sports HQ. “They produce very good running backs, they maximize their talents … I just want to be a part of that long history they have at Georgia.”

Just a short list of that “long history” includes the likes of Hershel Walker, Terrell Davis, and Nick Chubb. The first two of which are in the Pro-football hall of fame, and the last is forging a legacy of his own in the NFL right now. Robinson is undoubtedly placing high expectations on himself in those regards.

Along with the baggage attached to living up to so many all-time greats, Robinson also said he has his sights set on winning the Heisman Trophy, and he said Georgia was the best place to achieve such a goal.

“I feel like Georgia is the best opportunity for me to do that,” Robinson said while being compared to former Heisman Trophy winners Mark Ingram and Derrick Henry.

“They are one of the few teams left in the SEC that grounds them [their opponent] down.”

It’s obvious that Robinson values the decorated history and hard-nosed style of football Georgia embraces. But along with the reputational and stylistic aspect, Robinson also felt drawn to the coaching staff.

“I have a great relationship with our runningback coach, Coach McGee, and Coach Kirby Smart,” Robinson said in his CBS Sports HQ interview. “Making a bond with those coaches really drove me to Georgia.”

Robinson especially emphasized the relationship he has built with Coach McGee, saying in another interview with Georgia Bulldogs Football’s Youtube channel, “I can just talk to him about anything… most of the time it’s not even about football, we just talk about life.”

It’s hard to find the perfect fit for anything in life. But the trifecta of Georgia’s decorated history, run-centric playstyle, and authentic, the personable coaching staff was just that for Robinson. Now, he will be tasked with turning all of his opportunities into production. But Robinson knows what Georgia is getting from him. More than anything, he said to CBS Sports HQ, they are getting “a hard worker” and “a respectful man.”

With the full support of his coaches, ready to unleash all the vast potential that Robinson possesses, his goal of entering the Heisman conversation seems perfectly reasonable, if not inevitable.
