Ethan Anderson of Cox High’s state championship team joins UVA baseball a year early

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. —“If anything is worth doing, then it is worth giving your best effort,” said Frank W. Cox High School graduate Ethan Anderson, 17 years old. As a former Cox varsity baseball team catcher and highly sought after recruit, he lives by these words. Ethan verbally committed to play baseball for the University of Virginia (UVA) as an eighth-grader in 2017, and now he’s at Charlottesville to continue his athletic and academic career.

To fill some of his time when his father was serving in the Navy overseas, Ethan’s mother signed him up for baseball when he was 6 years old. He loved it and poured his energy into the sport for years. Baseball is a lifestyle in which Ethan thrives through each practice and game on each team he plays for. Ethan is attracted to the environment of a baseball game and the freedom of not playing against a clock until the last out is thrown. “I also simply enjoy hitting a ball with a bat,” laughed Ethan.

Being a part of the Cox varsity baseball team taught Ethan how to be an effective leader on and off the field. He believes the only easy day was yesterday and brings his high energy to the pitch every game. Ethan is a laid back guy but knows when it is game time. He creates an environment for himself and others to thrive in, and his determination to improve was contagious throughout the tightly bonded Cox team.

Ethan endured traveling on a different path than the regular student-athlete. In 2020, an opportunity arose in which he was offered the option to graduate high school and attend UVA early. When Ethan earned enough academic credits to be eligible to graduate after three years, nothing was stopping him from reaching his dreams even earlier.

The accomplishment of early graduation was made sweeter with a state championship. In June, Ethan and his eight senior teammates led Cox to victory over Woodgrove High School of Loudoun County, clinching the Class 5 state title and the school baseball program’s first championship since 1996.

Congratulations to the Cox varsity baseball team for winning the state championship, and we wish Ethan good luck in all his baseball endeavors!
