Chicago Cubs draft Mamaroneck High School alumnus Peter Matt

LARCHMONT, N.Y. — It was an exciting time for Larchmont native Peter Matt when the Chicago Cubs selected him in the MLB draft.

Peter Matt was selected as the 304th overall pick in the 10th round in the 2021 MLB draft after 12 months of uncertainty. His 2020 season at Duke was cut short by the COVID-19 virus.

Matt explained his struggle during that difficult time, stating that he was unsure if he would ever get the chance to play professional baseball. It was a long journey for the talented outfield batter. He was relentless in his training, working hard every day and improving on his skills, waiting for the opportunity to arise, and it finally did.

It was an emotional day for Matt. He had dreamed of playing baseball ever since he picked up a bat at five years old. He watched the draft closely at home. Mike Chiapparelli, a long-time Mamaroneck coach, was excited for his former player but not surprised by the achievement.

Peter Matt played under coach Chiapparelli for three years and won the 2015 Class AA State Championship as part of the Tigers. He also won the Section 1 Player of the year award and was part of the 2016 first-team all-state selection.
