Jason Veyna is Regina Red Sox head coach again

REGINA, Saskatchewan — Regina Red Sox head coach, Jason Veyna, is very familiar with the baseball program. He had a thriving career as an infielder before taking the bench.

On December 31, 1969, Jason Veyna was born to Fred and Lisa Veyna in Lamar, Colorado. He is a Lamar High School graduate and attended the Trinidad State Junior College before moving to Colorado State University, Pueblo.

As a junior at Lamar High School in 2006, Jason played basketball, football, and baseball. His baseball career began with the Savages under coach Dave Fassiotto where he played as a hitter and infielder. As an LHS senior, Veyna was part of the Top 50 Game. He owns the LHS record of 43 hits in one season.

He started his college career at the Trinidad State Junior College (TSJC), playing for two seasons. While with the Trojans as an all-district selection, he hit .403. In 2012, he served at TSJC as a college assistant under former Regina Red Sox coach Scott Douglas.

Jason later transferred to Georgia College and State as a starter. He played for the 2010 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) II Georgia College World Series team as a second baseman (2B). At GCSU, he played in 58 games, hit .305, had four home runs with 46 RBI and just eight errors at 2B. His college career ended in 2011 with a stint at CSU-Pueblo, Pueblo.

After closing the curtains on college baseball, he joined the Regina Red Sox in Colorado State as a second baseman (2B) to win the 2011 and 2012 Western Major Baseball League (WMBL). Jason’s .968 fielding percentage and hit of .277 with 25 RBI enabled the Regina Red Sox to win the 2011 league.

He also played for the Abilene Prairie Dogs in the 2012 North American League and the Trinidad Triggers in the 2013 Pecos League.

Following his playing career, Venya’s high school coach was the first to offer him an opening into the world of coaching. Shortly after taking up the position of infield coach at Lamar High School, his former coach retired, and Jason took his place as the new coach. There, the social studies teacher won the 2017 and 2018 Tri-Peaks League Coach of the Year awards.

In 2018, Veyna returned to the Regina Red Sox as an assistant after leading Lamar to a runner-up position in the state championship. The head coach, Mitch MacDonald, stepped down as head coach and took up the player personnel assistant job of the team to have more family time, thereby leaving his position open for Veyna. By the time he accepted the job, he and his wife Amellia already had a two-year-old daughter and were expecting their first son.

The 52-year-old Veyna has been the Regina Red Sox’s coach since 2019 and currently serves as head coach of the Lamar High School team. He has, so far, enjoyed being on the summer league collegiate team and loves how he is treated like family by the first-class organization.
