Deshon Brock brings hope for the Bradwell Institute Tigers

HINESVILLE, Ga. — Bradwell Institute High School opened a vacancy to hire a new football coach after Kyle Adkins left his position earlier in the year. The student committee sought the advice of an experienced coach, and Deshon Brock met those requirements.

Brock, who spent over four seasons coaching the Mitchell County Eagles, had returned to Hinesville in Georgia. Brock helped the Eagles reach the playoffs back-to-back. The team also reached the quarterfinals in section A, where they won 10 games and the championship in Region 1-A.

The coach knows the Georgia area well as he spent a lot of time coaching a basketball team at Ludowici. Back then, Brock’s team won two regional championships and at least 100 games. The funny thing is, he was just the assistant basketball coach. The man has an innate talent for coaching youth teams, first in basketball and now football.

“Hinesville is my adopted area,” Brock told the Coastal Courier.  “After my dad retired from the military, we settled down in Hinesville. Even while at Mitchell County, I came home quite often and spent time with my family. They were a key decision in taking the job at Bradwell.”

As the Eagles coach, Brock achieved a record 33-11 by making the playoffs every season. The Eagles were undefeated in the regional game for the first season and won the title long before reaching the playoffs. At that time, Brock was also recognized as the coach of the year.

Returning to Bradwell with the Tigers was a challenge for the experienced coach. Brock bets on the Hinesville Tigers’ success, despite the team going 0-7-1 in the 2020 season and not competing in the playoffs after having a hot streak in 2018 and 2019.

The coach has a champion mentality, which is why he does not accept a defeat. Bradwell’s team enters a new season with players who promise to be competitive. However, Bradwell’s scheduled game for the last week of August was affected by announcements from the school system.

Since August 25, the Liberty County School System switched to virtual classes over issues with Covid-19. The measure also applies to football matches until the second week of September.

The Tigers had to suspend the game on August 27 and reschedule it for September 10, when the suspension is lifted. The team started with a slight stumble as they lost to Westside-Macon, going 35-10. However, Brock predicts that his team will return hungry for victory; the game is just beginning.
