Massillon football head coach Nate Moore: Continuing a legacy of greatness

MASSILLON, Ohio — Since way back in the 1800s, northeastern Ohio has been the home of some of high school football’s greatest teams. Arguably, the greatest among them has been the Massillon Tigers. For decade upon decade, the Tigers have been consistently putting out great players and even better coaches, and head football coach Nate Moore is no exception.

Moore follows in the footsteps of great Massillon High School coaches, the most notable among them being Pro Football Hall of Famer Paul Brown, after which the Tiger Stadium is named. Brown coached the Tigers for eight years before making the jump to college and then the NFL, and don’t be surprised if coach Moore does the same.

Nate Moore spent his playing days at Dayton University, where he was a two-time Pioneer Football League All-American and distinguished himself as an athlete and a scholar.

Upon graduation, Moore went on to be an assistant coach for three years at Dayton-Chaminade-Julienne High School and then for another three years at Hamilton High School.

Moore made his high school head coaching debut at Minster High School before making the jump to LaSalle High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. At LaSalle, Moore led his squad to their first-ever state football title in 2014. From there, Moore, along with his wife and two children, made the move to Massillon, where he took over as the head football coach in 2015.

Since his arrival as the Tigers head coach, Moore has led his team to a 60-17 record, four consecutive regional championships, and three straight appearances in the Division II state championship game. Although they have come up short on each occasion, they look to make another run in 2021.

Moore’s arrival at Massillon began with a shaky start, however, as the Tigers went 4-6 in his first season at the helm. Year two was much better as Massillon managed to go 8-3, and Moore hasn’t looked back since.

The Tigers have amassed at least ten wins in each of their last four seasons, including an undefeated regular season in 2019. The Tigers ended up going 14-1 that year, with their only loss coming in the state championship game.

By November of 2019, Moore had proven his chops as a great head coach and was rewarded with a three-year contract extension.

Massillon High School Superintendent Paul Salvino told IndeOnline.com about the extension, “Obviously, Nate is doing a good job with wins and losses for our organization, the emphasis he has placed on the program for these young men has been amazing, and the academic push has been a major focus for him.”

With Nate Moore’s continued leadership, the Massillon Tigers look to continue to leave their mark on Ohio’s high school football scene.
