New Mexico Lobos football ready for long-awaited home opener

ALBQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico head football coach Danny Gonzales has waited a long time for his home debut in Albuquerque. The Lobos were 2-5 last season in seven total games but did not play in Albuquerque due to COVID-19 restrictions.

When UNM takes their home turf on Saturday against Houston Baptist, it will be the first home game in 642 days. It also marks a homecoming of sorts for defensive coordinator Rocky Long who has been on the UNM staff as a graduate assistant, defensive back assistant and also head coach (1998-2008).

The UNM-Houston Baptist game marks the first matchup between the two football squads. The HBU Huskies compete in the Southland Conference in the FCS subdivision. Kickoff is slated for 6:06pm MT on My50/MW Network.

The Lobos’ week two matchup has a larger presence in its football lore. When they take on the New Mexico State Aggies on September 11, a series will continue that had been played in 74 straight seasons before COVID-19 disrupted the schedule and nixed the 2020 matchup.

Gonzales’ squad has been picked to finish fifth in the College Football News preseason conference rankings.
