Head coach Craig Bennett and the Cambridge Bears aim for the best season

MILTON, Ga. – The Cambridge Bears did their old “Midnight Growl” to kick off this year’s football season.

The team, led for a decade by head coach Craig Bennett, has had eight of 10 winning seasons since 2011-12, and this may be due to their traditional ceremony. The Bears began with their seasonal practices at the beginning of August and arrived on the field at midnight on Aug. 2.

This year’s famous “Midnight Growl “was very important because it was linked to the 10th anniversary of high school and the football program. Coach Bennett continues his streak of being the only coach for the team in its decade history. Bennett created the program when he was athletic director at Cambridge.

Long before he made his Cambridge debut, the coach Milton, Pope, and Darlington School. Bennett is proud to lead the Bears with a record of 41-52, two winning seasons, and two games in the state playoffs.

The team held their traditional event, where they organized several food trucks and played traditional games with the Cambridge community. The institute’s SkillsUSA service was a great help to complete this kick-off project for the 2021-22 football season.

For Cambridge, the event was imperative because they could not do it last season because of the pandemic. The cheerleaders took to the field with encouragement, supporting their team and wishing them the best for the games to come.

Unfortunately, Cambridge’s first game against South Forsythe was cancelled. Although the team did not play its first scheduled game, this did not discourage them from doing their best in their next game.

In the next game, the Bears defeated North Oconee winning with a score of 21-19. However, it was not an easy game because the Oconee Titans struggled from the first quarter. The teams had a score of 14-13 second quarter. By the third quarter, the Bears made their growl until they earned the victory.

While Cambridge has had an interesting year so far, they’re looking to continue to grow following their first win. The team will face Forsyth Central, who is 1-1 for the season. The game against the Bulldogs will be at home on Sept. 10.
