Shaelyn Myers: the new catch for Regina Cougars women’s hockey

REGINA, Saskatchewan — If there is one thing the University of Regina women’s hockey head coach Sarah Hodges is known for, it is discovering and bringing in only the best players. So in 2020, she scouted for new talents to add to her team for the 2020/21 season. By April 2020, she had brought home eight players, and former Regina Rebels forward Shaelyn Myers was one of them.

News of the 18-year-old Melville-native’s decision to play with the U of R’s team was met with a series of congratulatory messages from her teammates and fans. When she was 15 years old, she played in her first league with the Parkland Lions as a Midget AA. The Parkland Lions Midget AA Girls team played in the South Saskatchewan Female Hockey League (SSFHL) and was home to Myers for the 2017/18 season.

During her 2017/2018 season with the Parkland Lions, she played 28 games in the league and scored 12 goals with 8 assists, earning 20 points. She also had 0.714 power-play goals (PPG) and 38 penalties in minutes (PIM). In the playoffs, Myers played 2 games and had 4 PIM.

Later in the 2017/18 season, Myer joined the Melville Prairie Fire. However, the leftie’s career with her home-based team was a short-lived one. She participated in the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League (SFMAAAHL) playoffs, where she played 4 games but scored no goals.

Myers joined the Regina Rebels in their 2018/2019 season and had a very successful career there. She played 28 games in the 2018/19 league and scored 8 goals with 12 assists to gain 20 total points and 16 PIM. In the playoffs, she played 10 games, had 1 assist, and 10 PIM.

Shaelyn Myers played 30 games in the 2019/20 season, scoring 9 goals and 11 assists to earn another 20 points. She also got 44 penalties in minutes. While playing for the Regina Rebels, she registered two 20-point seasons during her two midget campaigns. Her career at the Rebels ended with 17 goals, 23 assists, 40 points, and 60 penalties in minutes for 58 games. She got a hat trick at the game against Swift Current in 2020.

She hit a 26-2-1-1 record during her regular season in the SFMAAAHL before joining the U of R women’s hockey team.

Myers also had lots of nice things to say concerning the girls’ bond off the ice.

“It’s a really good atmosphere in the room, so it helps with our on-ice play for sure.” she said.

The University of Regina women’s hockey team has not been able to play in the U Sports League because of COVID-19 restrictions.

So far, the left shooter, born on 7 November 2002, has yet to play any games for the Cougars. She is 5-foot-10 and is currently studying physical education at the University of Regina.
