Coach Tim Godby leads Milton Lady Eagles to 14th state championship

MILTON, Ga. – Tim Godby is an exceptional lacrosse coach; he led the Milton Lady Eagles to the state championship, winning for the fourteenth time, back in May.

The coach has been working with the team for 17 years, where he has been labelled as a person of character and vision. Since he entered Milton College, Godby has only thought of one thing, to get his team to victory.

However, it was not always like that; Tim Godby came to the field with the Milton Lady Eagles in 2004. He was an inexperienced coach but determined to do the sports program. Godby went from preparing basketball teams in Georgia to a group of girls playing lacrosse for the first time.

The coach remembers that he had no idea what the game was like when he arrived on the field. But he wanted to try it, to show himself how good an instructor he was, even though he had never practiced the sport.

With over a decade and a half of experience, the coach can firmly say he has achieved his goal by leading the Eagles and winning the 14th state trophy. Godby rose to the hall of fame in 2019 as one of the best lacrosse coaches in Georgia.

It is a great honor for the coach to belong to that small number of people who have changed Georgia at the sporting level. In the same way, the coach does not forget his technical team, who helped him with the program.

Under his guidance, the Eagles have won 14 of the 16 state championships since the GHSA approved the lacrosse. According to the coach, the key to success was to sow competitiveness in the girls to give their best in each game.

When the Eagles won their first state championship in 2005, Godby recalls that several high school girls wanted to play the sport. The coach promoted a sports culture in a type of game not widely practiced in Georgia without realizing it.

For now, Tim Godby does not intend to leave the Milton Lady Eagles but seeks to lead them to be one of Georgia’s most famous lacrosse teams. Godby enjoys his work and the bond he has formed with the older players on the team and the new ones to practice it.

The Eagles had won the state championships of 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2021 when in the final game, they faced Dunwoody, defeating them with a score of 17-0. By the end of the 2020-21 season, the team set an overall milestone of 21-0 and a perfect league record of 6-0.
