Shawn Quinn: get to know the football coach who brings joy to the Savannah State Tigers

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Among the outstanding college football coaches is Shawn Quinn. He guides those magnificent plays that the Savannah State Tigers show on the field.

Quinn started with the team in the 2019 season, becoming the 16th coach to hit the Savannah State University field. The coach has marked milestone after milestone, and in his first season, he coached the Tigers to an overall record of 7 wins and 3 losses. This had not happened with the team since the 1998 season.

Quinn’s experience is credited to more than two decades of coaching experience in Tennessee and Georgia.

Since 1998, he has been leading the tight end or linebacker positions. To begin, Quinn gave the Armuchee High team in Georgia a great season, appearing to be the right coach for the Indians. However, Quinn’s future was not with the team, so he coached Maryville the following season.

With the Tennessee team, the coach helped Maryville High win the 1998 state championship. After his debut, Quinn assisted couch Phillip Fulmer from 1999 until 2002, when he retired. With Maryville, the coach made it to three bowl games.

With more energy than ever, Quinn joined the Louisiana Lafayette coaching staff in 2002, where he served as a coach on the defensive line. With Quinn, the team won the Sun Belt Cup in the 2005 season.

With so many years as a coach, Quinn was honored in 2019 as the coach of the year on the Black College Sports Network.

Quinn has also pushed the sport forward by serving as a recruiter for players competing in the NFL, including Tyson Jackson in Atlanta, Jason Whitten in Dallas, Darius Eubanks in Tampa Bay, and Charles Tillman in Carolina.

His coaching experience has brought Quinn to one of the most competitive teams in Georgia, the Savannah State Tigers. Since 2019 the coach has made their opponents fear his unit because of the team’s solid defense.

For this new football season, Quinn leads the Tigers with a record of 1 win and 1 loss. In the last game, the coach used various offensive strategies to defeat Livingstone College, leaving them with a disproportionate score of 50-6. With this victory, Quinn puts behind the lost game against Valdosta State.

The Tigers will return to the field again on Sept. 18 against Benedict College at home. Shawn Quinn has a master’s degree from Lincoln Memorial University and studied BA in History and Political Science in 1995.
