Iona College announces Alyssa Tiumalu as new softball head coach

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Iona College announced Alyssa Tiumalu as the new head coach of the softball team on their website on Thursday, starting her first spell as a head coach of a softball program.

“So thankful to be a part of Gael Nation,” Tiumalu said in a Twitter post. “Thank you to everyone who has been a part of my journey! To my friends and family, I love you all and can’t wait for what’s ahead!”

Tiumalu joins the Gaels after five years as assistant coach at St. John’s University. During her time with the Red Storm, she helped bring them to the Big East Regular Season Championship in 2017 and 2019. Tiumalu helped St. John’s get to the Big East Tournament three out of her four full seasons there. In 2017 and 2019, she and the rest of St. John’s staff were selected as the Big East Coaching Staff of the Year.

During her playing career, Tiumalu was a part of the UCLA Bruins. She appeared in the NCAA tournament in all four seasons there. During her four-year career, she started in 151 games as several positions, from catcher to right field. She has 18 home runs and 64 runs, scoring 49 times. Tiumalu finished her college career with a .223 batting average and 57 RBIs.
