Isaac Garro Coto continues excellent form for Monroe College

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — Freshman Isaac Garro Coto showcased his talent with his performance for Monroe College in their recent 6-2 win against CCBC Essex.

Garro Coto secured a hat trick for the Mustangs, his first ever for the college. The Costa Rican has been on fire recently for his team. He scored three goals in three games before his hat trick, with two in a 5-0 win at Montgomery College and one in a 6-0 win at Mercer County Community College.

Before Monroe, Garro Coto played futsal for Desamparados Borussia. He scored two goals in the 2017 Men’s U20 National Championship, a national futsal tournament in Costa Rica. He was able to attend Monroe through the help of Futbol Consultants, an academy focused on providing young players with development and opportunity in their careers.

When he came to Monroe, he had trouble trying to make his mark on the pitch. In the 2020-21 season, he hadn’t scored any goals in 290 minutes over four games. His shots were less accurate, with six out of 10 shots being on target. Overall, he was struggling to find his tempo in Monroe’s quality team. The Mustangs were still able to perform, with two 7-0 wins against Suffolk Community College and the Monroe College Bronx campus, as well as a 5-1 win against Montgomery College.

Becoming a standout player on Monroe’s team is tough, but Garro Coto has been able to do it.

Garro Coto is going to be a huge part of Monroe’s team season, even as a freshman. The first-year midfielder is now leading the team with his six goals in four games. He’s using his time on the pitch much more efficiently. He’s scored all his goals within 138 minutes, 152 minutes less than last season. With 11 shots on goal out of 12, he’s made sure his shot-taking is much more critical than last season.

Monroe highlighted the freshman’s good form by naming him the male Athlete of the Week. They focused on his performance against CCBC Essex, where he scored three goals in less than 20 minutes.

Monroe has shown that they’re more than ready to take on whoever they play this year. They’ve only lost against Salt Lake Community College with a 3-0 score line. If Garro Coto continues his form, he’s sure to solidify his spot in the starting 11 for Monroe. Garro Coto and the Mustangs have another chance to put up a huge score line when they play Cowley College on Wednesday.
