The Savannah State Tigers women’s basketball team has had the best overall record in the last two seasons

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah State Tigers women’s basketball team have concluded a season that left great emotion for many fans. The athletes demonstrated that they have the skills to mark a milestone in each season they participate in.

The women’s basketball season, which began on Feb. 8, was surrounded by uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, where the teams had no idea when the season started. But it was completed successfully, giving the Savannah Tigers seven great games where they finished with a record of 5-2. The Savannah State Tigers men’s basketball team had only three season games where they finished with an 0-3 record.

Savannah State enters a new season with coach Cedric Baker. He leads the team for a 17th season. With Baker as a guide, the team has improved its winning percentage, from .142 in the 2005 season to .714 in the last season.

The athletes representing the team are Le’Andrea Gillis, Azhana Maxwell, Bria Gibbs, and Ta’Kyla Austin, who were present in each game held this year. The women’s basketball team has grown, leaving behind unfavorable overall records to mark a predominant milestone.

During the 2019-20 season, the team set an overall record of 15-8.  In the 2020 conference schedule, the Tigers went 10-7 with a .588 winning percentage.

Some of the most memorable games of 2020 were Savannah State against Albany State, where the team emerged victorious by 70-52 and 85-53. The Tigers did it again for this new season, leaving the University of Albany with two consecutive losses.

Although the team started this 2021 season with a loss, this did not discourage them in subsequent games, helping them close the season with a solid overall record of 5-2. Savannah State won the four games following the opening game against Fort Valley and Albany State in its two rounds. However, they lost a second game against Benedict College with a score of 81-73. Finally, the girls came back, beating Allen University with a 76-71 score.

The Tigers are looking forward to the next basketball season, where they hope to defeat Benedict College and continue their upward trajectory.
