Mississauga Steelheads available on CBC and OHL Live this season

TORONTO, ON — After a transitional and difficult 2020-21 season, the Canadian Hockey League is making an extra effort to get fans back and reinvigorated for a new campaign. One way of doing this was to expand their TV exposure and the CHL did just that, partnering with the CBC on a multi-platform, multi-year broadcasting rights partnership with the corporation.

The official announcement was made this past Thursday.

“We are very excited to drop the puck on Saturday afternoons during the 2021-22 season with the CBC,” said CHL President Dan MacKenzie. “Their iconic position in Canadian hockey combined with the CHL’s role as the top development league in the world will make for a winning partnership.”

While the Western Hockey League and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League will both benefit from this new deal, that goes especially for the Ontario Hockey League. After all, unlike the WHL and QMJHL, the OHL had their 2020-21 campaign cancelled without playing a single game, so this deal should be the beginning of a resilient 2021-22 season for the league.

Of the six games, each of the three CHL leagues will be represented twice. The first of which will take place on Saturday, Oct. 2 featuring the Regina Pats — whose roster includes 2023 NHL Draft favourite Connor Bedard — playing host to the Prince Albert Raiders.

In regards to the Mississauga Steelheads, specifically, they will be one of the teams included in the six games to be featured on CBC this fall — the last of the six contests. The Steelheads will be on CBC on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 3:00 PM ET when they visit the Kingston Frontenacs, whose roster includes 2022 NHL Draft headliner, Shane Wright.

“We’re proud to partner with the CHL and we’re looking forward to sharing the excitement of Canadian major junior hockey with fans across the country this fall,” said Chris Wilson, Executive Director, Sports & Olympics, CBC. “We’re committed to engaging our audiences on a regional and community level, and this partnership with the CHL helps to further that commitment by providing fans more opportunities to cheer on their local teams.”

While they will be featured on CBC TV, the six games will also be featured on CBCSports.ca, the CBC Sports app and the free CBC Gem streaming service.

But that’s not all. Beginning in November, CBC Gem, CBCSports.ca, and the CBC Sports app will be offering live streaming coverage of one CHL game per week for the remainder of the 2021-22 regular season. Which games those will be have yet to be determined but will be announced in the coming weeks.

In addition to CBC’s coverage of the new CHL season, the league is also available for live streaming on the CHL TV app. This was also announced this past Thursday.

For all the Steelheads fans, the newly unveiled OHL TV is available as part of the CHL TV package, so they don’t have to miss a game this season.

OHL TV will deliver a high-quality viewing experience, providing access to more than 700 OHL games streamed across a range of platforms. These platforms include PC and tablet on Safari and Google Chrome web browsers in addition to iOS and Android mobile devices.
But, again, that’s not all. Fans can also access CHL TV on the Amazon Fire, Apple TV and Roku platforms. For $109.99 (plus taxes and fees), OHL fans can enjoy full access to all scheduled games throughout the 2021-22 season. So, for each team, including the Steelheads, fans won’t have to miss a game this season.

Additionally, fans will also have the option of purchasing a monthly pass, which will provide access to all OHL games over the span of one month for $24.99. Or, if you’d prefer, a 24-hour pass for OHL Live will also be available for $6.99.

If that weren’t enough, the all-new OHL Live on CHL TV features free-to-access video-on-demand content as well as a user-friendly interface that is easy to navigate.
So, if fans are unable to go out to any games this season, no problem. They can select your package by visiting watch.chl.ca/ohl on your web browser.

The 2021-22 CHL regular season begins on September 30 and will conclude on April 3, 2022.

It promises to be an exciting season ahead, especially with the return of the Memorial Cup, which will take place from June 3-12. The host team has yet to be announced but will be in the coming weeks. Nevertheless, be sure that the CHL and their teams are all back with a vengeance, including the Mississauga Steelheads.
