Jesuit teams are fueling Sacramento’s sports

CARMICHAEL, Calif. — In the world of high school sports teams in Sacramento, Jesuit stands firm on the list of highly respected sportsmanship. Its programs include fifteen varsity sports teams, and the majority of these activities offer freshman squads and JV.

Jesuit has its hands on virtually all sports that one can think of. Each sport has its own season. Water polo and football are played in fall, while winter conveys the more rigorous activities such as wrestling, basketball, and soccer. Other sports like rugby, swimming/diving, and volleyball come around in spring.

Among the performances is the rugby category that had gone on to win nine championships at the national level in 2019, as well as many state victories. Although the activities were hampered by health challenges and stalled weather issues during the tournaments at the national championships held in Salt Lake City in 2019, Jesuit almost recorded a loss but was lucky to finish with a win against Gonzaga College High School, the team’s old cross-country competitor. After the episode, Jesuit progressed to the competition, aiming for another championship. An unexpected turn at the event was when Gonzaga created a channel to recognize its opponent while Jesuit stormed the playing field.

During that match, Jesuit came out on top, winning another championship for the ninth time in Herriman High School, a close hometown high school team. Herriman underwent a loss by an obstacle near the goal-line before the games ended.

Many notable rugby players are products of Jesuit, successful in their careers and have played for the United States National Team, including the U- games such as the U-16, U-17, U-19, Men’s rugby, and collegiate.

The rugby champs have clinched nine championships at the state level. In 2005 and 2006, they became eligible to play at the Nike Cross Nationals, where they reached the seventh and fourth positions.

Basketball is another strength of the school, and Chris Holley, a point guard for Jesuit who recently gained admission to the state men’s basketball team is a testimony.

The 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds, Sacramento indigene joined the men’s basketball team (National Letter of Intent) in April 2021 as a result of his track records of hard work, resilience, and flawless history as a Jesuit product.

Furthermore, Holley was recruited as the No. 2 man for the 2021-2022 season of Sacramento State’s recruiting program. Now holding the forward/center position in the team, Holley will play side-by-side with Jonathan Komagum, who is also a new recruit.

The head coach for the men’s basketball in Sacramento, Brian Katz, unveiled Holley to the club.

“We are excited to have Chris as part of our basketball family. He is a very skilled guard that really understands team play and is a very willing passer,” Katz said in a press release. “His creativity with both hands and both feet will serve him well at this level. He is a bit of a late bloomer, and still has a high ceiling that we look forward to helping him achieve.”

This is a great achievement for the young lad, symbolizing the greatness that Jesuit prides itself in.

Through the ups and downs, Jesuit sports teams are surging forward, undeterred. The football rankings showed the Jesuit Football team has 43.4, while overall, they stayed in the 2-1 pedestal. They are guarding their championship titles jealously.

Behind all these combined stories of the good, the best, and the not-so-good, stands a dedicated squad of coaches whose priorities are hinged on Jesuit’s winnings.

Marlon Blanton is the head coach of the Varsity Football team. As a professional physical educator, Blanton’s role in the football wing of Jesuit’s sport is justified. He joined the school’s staff in 2012.

Aaron Engebretson is another powerful coach in charge of the JV Golf. With years of profound experience in history and philosophy, Engebretson has been exhibiting his positive vibes on JV golf since 2015.

Although Jesuit is pushing the narrative with its conquered feats, the tides don’t always flow in its favor, as many rugged terrains still need to be smoothened to raise the bar for Jesuit. To whom much is given, much is required. There is plenty of room for improvement. More trails await the season of blazing to put Jesuit’s name on the list of the hottest high school sports teams in Sacramento.
