The Regina Pat Canadians: the future of midget hockey In Saskatchewan

REGINA, Saskatchewan — The Regina Pat Canadians is a male Midget AAA Ice hockey team based in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. The team plays in the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League, which comprises 12 Clubs. The C’s, as the Club is fondly called, have been one of the most successful teams in the league since its inception.

The C’s play their home games at the Brandt Center in Regina. The center, formerly known as the Regina Agridome, is an indoor arena in Regina that was opened in 1977 and has been home to the Pat Canadian since then. It has a capacity of 6,200 for hockey games and has brought lots of good memories to C’s fans over the years.

The Pat Canadians are one of the most successful ice hockey teams in Regina. The Club has produced several successful hockey players and brought home many trophies since it was established. Since they won their first Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA hockey League championship in 1977, they have gone on to win the League 10 more times. The last time they won it in 2017 made them 11-time Champions.

In the last 10 years alone (2011-2021), they have won two league titles and made the semi-final five times. It is crucial to note that since the 2020-21 League season was canceled, the C’s have made seven semi-finals out of nine in the last nine years, making them one of the most consistent teams in the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA hockey League.

When it comes to the national championship, the Regina Pat Canadians have been one of the dominating teams in the competition since it was inaugurated in the 1978-79 season. The Telus Cup is one of the most contested national championships, the team that plays the Telus Cup must first win the year’s playoff championship before advancing to the Regional Midget AAA Championship. After winning the Midget AAA Championship, the team will now have a chance to play the Telus cup.

But guess what? With all the processes involved in playing the Telus championship, The C’s have participated in the Championship several times, winning it four times – first in 1983, then 1988, 1994, and 1999. They have also come second twice in the competition (1985 and 1989), and most recently, in 2015, they came third in the competition. Only one team has more national championships than the C’s – the Notre Dame Hounds with five.

Meanwhile, the Regina Pat Canadian can undoubtedly produce this type of record because of the players and coaches who have passed through the team over time. Tim Iannone is one of the Club’s most outstanding players. He has the record of the most goals, most assists, and points per season.

The C’s have also found a way to reward their players through a scholarship called the Adam Herold Award. The award is given to Regina Pat Canadian players, who are good examples on and off the ice. So far, Blake Swetlikoff has won the award twice in 2019 and 2020.

With the season opened after the cancellation because of COVID-19, the C’s have started to show that they still have all it takes to maintain the lead as one of the dominating teams in the League.

In their first game against the Estevan Bears, they trashed the Estevan Bears 9-1. Also, on the 16th of September, the C’s outscored one of their all-time rivals, the ND Hounds, 5-1.

“It was super nice to get into it. There were lots of times that I was questioning (if the League will open),” Logen Hammett, the Regina Pat Canadians captain, said about the opening of the season.

With players like Koen Senft and Noah Sharp joining the Club, fans are eager and looking forward to what coach Darrin McKechnie and his boys have for their fans and ice hockey lovers in the ongoing season.
