Kempsville football pulls off shocker, upsets No. 14 Salem on the road

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Determined to turn around a struggling program, head coach Daryl
Cherry knew that Kempsville needed a signature win.

His Chiefs came through in a big way on Friday night, as Kempsville went on the road and pulled off a 17-8 upset of 14th-ranked Salem on Friday night. This marked the Chiefs’ first victory against the Sundevils since 2009.

Salem got off to a fast start offensively, as quarterback Angelo Liotta hit Jaeden McMurrin for a 65-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. From that point on, it was a defensive battle. Kempsville did find some offense late in the first half, as junior quarterback Noah Lee had a 1-yard rushing touchdown, then the Chiefs tacked on a field goal to take a 10-8 halftime lead.

Despite the offensive struggle for both sides, receiver Noah Jackson finished with 98 yards on two receptions, and running back NaiQuan Washington-Pearce had 102 yards on 23 carries, including a 9 yard rush late in the fourth quarter that put the game away for the Chiefs.

Kempsville (2-1) bounced back from their loss to powerhouse Green Run, as they now prepare to face Tallwood at home next Friday night. The reeling Sundevils (2-2) will prepare to face winless First Colonial at home next Friday.
