FRHS has hired Dave Walck to be the new AD
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Dave Walck is Fossil Ridge High School’s new Assistant Principal and Athletic Director. His range of experience in the sports world is impressive, but it’s more his passion for creating an enriching and positive environment that makes him fit for the role.
Personally participating in basketball, track, and cross country in high school, and later volleyball in college, he eventually began his 28-year coaching career in volleyball. He’s played the part of fan, athlete, coach (both head and assistant), and official, and he’s even been a Student Council Advisor and Assistant Track Coach for many years each.
But what Dave really cares about is fostering experiences and memories that could last a lifetime. As Athletic Director, he sees himself as a coach of coaches. A coach is expected to provide instruction in skill, but you also have an opportunity to encourage development for individuals.
As Dave says, “When you look back at educators in your life, you often don’t think of the skills that were taught. You often think of the relationship that was built and how this ‘coach’ enhanced your toolbox as a person.”
This being his 15th year as an AD, he’s undoubtedly inspired many student-athletes and fellow coaches already. While his personal influences are numerous, one person that stands out to him is his own high school Asst. Principal and AD, Pete Nolan of Eagle Valley High School. To this day, Dave strives to be the role model that Pete has been for so many.
His wish for the athletes and teams at FRHS is to “enjoy the time. Make sure to find, establish, and show honor, passion, and joy during your time as a high school student-athlete. There are no do-overs.” While the loss is inevitably a part of any sport, Dave borrows a quote from Winston Churchill when faced with adversity or failure: “You make a living by what you get, and you make a life by what you give.” Dave is very excited to be part of the Fossil Ridge community, and he is always open to others’ opinions and perspectives to ensure the school’s programs positively represent this community.
