Undefeated: Daniel Hernandez from boxer to coach

UPLAND, Calif. — Introducing Daniel Hernandez, owner and boxing coach at Undefeated Boxing Club, located in Upland. Daniel has been coaching for the past four years and opened his own club in late 2020, amidst an array of COVID barriers.

Daniel grew up boxing as a kid. His dad, Ruben Hernandez, was an amateur boxer and kept him involved with the sport and always in the gym. Still today, they watch and study boxing together.  Daniel is the Southern California State Amateur Champion (2018) and shares, “I’ve always enjoyed the hard work and discipline that comes from boxing.”

Daniel talks about preaching patience to his fighters and explains to them that each fight is a lesson and one never loses, they either win or learn. This is the reason he named his gym, ‘Undefeated’. He adds, “You can’t rush greatness. Boxing training is the most painful sport, so if you don’t have patience you will want to give up.”

In order to be successful in this sport it’s crucial to stay dedicated to your training. Drills and mental preparation are two things that need to be focused on in order to progress and succeed. Daniel’s students have been his inspiration to keep growing his gym and the community that surrounds it.

“I have so much knowledge in this sport and I am committed to continue teaching my techniques to my fighters and clients. I want to inspire others and share my passion and knowledge with everyone who is a part of my gym.”

Daniel’s most memorable moment was during his student, Ronnie’s, third fight. He had lost his first two fights, against other boxers with years more experience, and this next opponent was no different. He knew his potential and believed in his fighter.  He also knew that once Ronnie shook off the nerves, he would impress everyone with his skills. That’s exactly what he did, and with a packed house at United Boxing Club in Moreno Valley, Calif., Ronnie got his first victory and won convincingly!

This boxers’ proudest coaching moment was when he coached his 9-year-old female fighter, Rachel, in the Silver & Gold state tournament in Primm, Nevada. In the very first round, her opponent felt her power, so in the second round she began to circle the ring and stay away. During the break, Daniel told Rachel to feint hard with the jab, then pull back to bait her opponent in and counter. “She executed this beautifully!” he exclaimed. You can see her fight on the Club’s Instagram page.

Daniel’s motto that he shares with his students, is “Dedication over motivation”. He believes that whatever dream you want to accomplish, especially a very difficult one like becoming a boxer, demands dedication. There will be days of low motivation, but dedication will keep you in the gym working towards your goal. Daniel’s hope is to leave his own unique training style as his legacy and that boxing schools across the world will implement his training programs in the future.

If you’re looking for a boxing coach, make sure they have a deep understanding of the sport. It can be dangerous and you need someone that will progress you through training, while incurring the least amount of damage.

“I never lose.  I either win or learn,” Hernandez said.
