Milton High School boys basketball looking to build off state title campaign

MILTON, Ga. — With almost a month and a half until the next basketball season, the Milton High School team is preparing to get onto the court again. Not surprisingly, coach Allen Whitehart arrived with a new offensive strategy to win each scheduled game. Milton has had four great seasons where they have raised the name of the school.

Last season the men’s basketball team had an excellent season where they won the state championship. The Eagles hadn’t done so well in the competition since 2012 when David Boid coached them, but this team was different and proved so on the court.

In April, the Eagles participated in the GEICO National Games held at the Suncoast Credit Union Arena. The competition, which began in 2009, brought together over 20 basketball teams from across the country and Milton was part of that selection.

Milton High School faced IMG Academy in the opening of the quarterfinals on April 1, and although they were defeated, they had a great game. The Eagles started the game with an advantage, leading IMG with a 20-12 score. However, the Florida team returned in the third quarter, and ended the period with a score of 61-48.

Despite Milton’s hard work in the game’s final minutes, IMG held on just enough to win 73-68.

While Milton didn’t get a chance at GEICO Nationals, this does not discredit them as one of the most competitive student basketball teams. In the 2020-21 GHSA season, the team finished with an overall record of 28-3, including 26 consecutive wins at one point. With those strong performances, Milton earned their third overall state title.

For now, the Eagles are training to open next season in the best of spirits. Coach Allen Whitehart will represent the team for the fifth time to lead them to victory.

Milton will open the season on Nov. 17 with a home game against the Roswell Hornets, coming off a balanced 2020-21 season. Their next game is scheduled for Nov. 20 against North Gwinnett, one of the more aggressive teams in the previous season.

This new season promises a new pair of arms, as Milton will be recruiting athletes until Sept. 26. This will be the last year at Milton High for star players like Cameron Ellis and Broc Bidwell.
