Victoria BC native Gavin Cobb is thriving on his new Manitoba Bisons team

WINNIPEG, Manitoba In only his second game with the U of M Bisons, Victoria, British Columbia standout Gavin Cobb is making plays both at receiver and punt returner. Cobb transferred from Simon Fraser University; an NCAA Division II school that plays in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Though the team hadn’t seen much success during Cobb’s time there, it should not undermine the amount of production he had on the field. In his three seasons at SFU, Cobb ran for over 2,000 yards in kickoff returns, on the offensive side of the ball he had over 1,000 yards and was always a top-three target in his receiver core.

“It’s kind of like all eyes are on you, and the rest is up to you. You just run find that gap and hit it hard,” said Cobb in an interview with Mike Still when describing his passion for returning kicks.

There were a couple of reasons why the Bisons’ program stood out to the Victoria native, one being the fact that Bisons’ head coach Brian Dobie started recruiting Cobb when he was still playing high school football at Mount Douglas Secondary School.  It also helps that the Bisons have assembled a competitive roster that’s filled with talented returning players both on the offensive and defensive side of the football.

“The decision to come to Manitoba, I kind of felt that it was what was best for me. I didn’t talk to any other schools just because I had a good relationship with Coach Dobie,” explained Cobb in an article by Mike Still, Bisons Sports.

This past Saturday, Cobb put on a spectacular performance against the University of Alberta Golden Bears. He was named the Canada West Special Teams Player of the Week for scoring a 91-yard punt return touchdown. Not only was Cobb a factor on special teams, he also scored two touchdowns and had 88 yards receiving.

“The team is pretty much Vanier ready. I feel like I could be the piece to the puzzle that gets the team to the championship,” stated Cobb in an article by Mike Still, Bisons Sports.

Though it is still too early in the season to speculate who will come out on top in the always competitive Canada West Division, it is looking good so far for the 2-0 Bisons as they are still one of three teams who remain undefeated in the University Sports Football standings and sit at first in their respected division. There’s no doubt that if the Bisons keep playing their brand of football and veteran players like Cobb keep producing, they’ll likely find their way back to the Canada West semi-final game to try and avenge their loss from 2019.
