Dave Masur continues to lead the Red Storm men’s soccer team

QUEENS, N.Y. (BVM) — The main objective of all sports is finding a way to simply win, no matter what. Dave Masur has done an excellent job at completing that specific objective.

Now working through his 30th season as the head coach of the St. John’s University (SJU) Red Storm men’s soccer team, Masur has had much success.  Before the current season began in the summer, Masur had a record of 374-162-90. That record places him fourth among active coaches in total victories in Division I history.

Masur’s greatest accolade as a head coach would be winning the 1996 national title. That would be the first national championship in the school’s history, which solidified Masur’s legacy as one of the greatest college coaches of all-time. It also stands as the only national championship in SJU men’s soccer team history.

Other accomplishments led by Masur’s coaching would include making four appearances in the NCAA College Cup (1996, 2001, 2003, 2008). Masur has also won nine Big East Tournament titles, while making the NCAA Tournament 21 times.

The veteran coach’s achievements and leadership abilities has made Queens, New York a popular destination for some of the best soccer prospects on both a national and international level.

On the 41-man roster, there are currently 15 international players who come from countries such as England, France, Canada, Germany, Trinidad and Tobago, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Spain.

Now underway in his 30th season as the head coach of the SJU Red Storm men’s soccer team, Masur is looking to lead his team deep into the season, as he had with his past Red Storm teams.

Due to the impact of the pandemic last year, there were no games played during the fall season. However, the Red Storm did have a spring season that consisted of 10 games where they had a win-loss record of 5-5.

Currently, the Red Storm have a record of 7-3-1, which places them fourth in the Big East Conference behind the Providence Friars. The team had gone on a six game winning streak, before a tie against Connecticut. SJU looks to continue as Big East play carries on.

Coming off a win against the Creighton Bluejays earlier in the season, the legendary coach knows that he is playing in one of the toughest divisions in the country.

“The BIG East is a tough conference,” Masur told Red Storm Sports. “It’s the toughest I’ve seen since I’ve been here.  It’s the physicality, the quality. The coaching in our conference is very, very good.  Creighton had a higher RPI than us.  They played some really good teams, so we’re happy to get a result.  We just know that every game is going to be really tough.  It’s just the second step in a series of many battles ahead of us.”

This current team led by Masur has found a good rhythm now in the middle of the season. They are hoping that good rhythm can turn into something special.
