Matthew Gallant: a defender with an eye for the goal

MOOSE JAW, Saskatchewan — The Moose Jaw Warriors are one of the luckiest teams to have a new addition like Matthew Gallant on their side. The latest signing was announced on Sept. 14 alongside three other players.

Matthew Gallant was born on Jan. 16, 2004 in the Metro Vancouver Regional District in Langley, British Columbia. In 2018, he joined the Delta Hockey Academy U15 Prep from the Pacific Academy. The Delta Hockey Academy was founded in 2004, the same year he was born. Since then, Gallant has not looked back when it comes to pursuing his dream of becoming a star hockey player.

Gallant, 17, is 5-foot-1 ft and weighs 73 kilograms, the perfect body size that he needs to be an impressive defender. As a right shooter, he has also used his strong hands to inflict severe blows in the nets of opposing teams.

He made history when he played in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League. His impact in the 2018-19 season with the Delta Hockey Academy U15 Prep has gone down the history book of the Academy, and many will be intrigued to read it.

In 30 games played as a defender, Gallant saw the net four times and provided six assists. He made a 100% contribution to goals in the playoffs, playing three games, scoring one goal, and providing two assists.

Still in the same league, but this time with the U18 team, he joined the Western Van Academy Prep in the 2019-20 season, where he played 35 games and provided eight assists. Only three defenders had more assists than him.

He went back to the Delta Hockey Academy U18 Prep in the 2020-21 season, but played only four games before the canceled season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2021-22 season was now time to move to the Western Hockey League. The Moose Jaw Warriors signed him, and he joined them with his A-Game. Gallant was named the first star of the game in the last preseason game, which the Moose Jaw Warriors played against the Regina Pats Canadians on Sept. 25. During the game, he scored two goals and provided one assist. What a defender with an eye for the goal! His goal helped the Moose Jaw Warriors win the match 5-2.

His father, Kevin Gallant, will be very proud of his son’s accomplishments so far. Gallant Senior was also a hockey player in his days and played for the Regina Play-by-Play.

“It is actually a special feeling for you to end the season with 2 goals and an assist, we definitely stocked to the game plan, and that is what helped us win the game tonight,” Gallant said in an interview with Ultimate Fan Zone about how he feels about the two goals and one assist he earned in the game.

“They added some skilled players to the lineup that had a massive impact,” Regina Pats Head Coach Dave Struch commented on the impact of the new players on the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Without a doubt, fans are sure one of the players Struch was referring to was Gallant because the defender was one the Regina Pats team dealt with that night. Look out for the new generation Gallant as the season starts.
