RBC’s Lindsay Mazzucco plays to win on and off the field

FAIR HAVEN, N.J. — Originally played by indigenous peoples of the Americas, Lacrosse has come a long way since those early days. Not only has the sport grown across all demographics, for women it has exploded. Lax (as it is known) encourages strength and confidence, all while improving social skills. Girls learn at an early age about goal setting (literally) and the importance of teamwork. All valuable lessons for a life well-lived.

Fair Haven’s own Lindsay Mazzucco has played the sport since the tender age of 9. Over the spring, she led the Red Bank Catholic Caseys to qualify for the Shore Conference Tournament. They later went on to defeat Shore in an unforgettable game while she gave one of the greatest performances of her career. To her coaches, she is known as the player who understands how to “play big” when it counts.

Fair Haven Living caught up with her to see how things are going on and off the field:

How old were you when you started playing lacrosse and did you fall in love with the sport instantly?
Mazzucco: I started playing in fourth grade at St. James elementary school. At first, I was uneasy but quickly fell in love with being a goalie. I then played on a travel team about a year later and have loved it ever since.

How would you rate the competition in Monmouth County among the girls’ teams compared to other local areas?
Mazzucco: Monmouth County has some pretty decent competition. There is a lot of talent in our area, which helped everyone grow as a player.
There are some challenging teams but the intensity is much higher in North Jersey.

You will be attending Quinnipiac College in the fall – what attracted you to this school?
Mazzucco: When I visited Quinnipiac for the first time, it felt like home. I just knew that it would be the perfect place for me to grow as a person and an athlete. They have beautiful facilities and endless opportunities.

What will your academic schedule look like?
Mazzucco: I plan to major in applied business, which requires a business class, and the various freshmen basics that come with it. This comes with math, English, and science courses as a base.

What is your favorite thing that comes to mind about growing up in Fair Haven?
Mazzucco: I love the community and how everything is so geographically close. It’s a beautiful area with great people. The accessibility is convenient with everything being around the corner.

Are there any other sports that you enjoy playing?
Mazzucco: Besides lacrosse, during high school, I played field hockey and basketball. I was more serious about basketball when I was younger but quickly realized lacrosse was the way to go.

Tell us about your family. Does athleticism run in the family?
Mazzucco: I have an older brother and he played a few different sports throughout high school for fun. My dad played baseball in high school and almost went pro.

What are your goals for the future?
Mazzucco: Although I will be majoring in applied business, my plan is to go to Law School in the future. I would love to be part of law enforcement in detective work or working against criminals.

Fun Fact: Did you know that the first women’s lacrosse team in the United States was played at the Bryn Mawr School in Maryland in 1926?
