Jadyn Edwards is having a player of the year season for New Mexico Lobos soccer

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Senior Jadyn Edwards has put the New Mexico Lobos women’s soccer team on the map this season leading the team to a current record of 9-2.

The Lobos are hot right now behind the senior Edwards. They’re currently on an eight-game winning streak that includes being 4-0 in Mountain West play. Their last game against Boise State was won on the foot of Edwards as she scored the game’s only goal in the 58th minute off a pass from teammate Maysa Walters.

Walters talked about Jadyn’s goal saying, “Jadyn was really ready for it and she was playing for seconds and it was a great finish for her,” Walters said. “She kind of popped off a runner and I just slid it and then kind of went on the ground and it was great.”

The Lobos were tired against Boise State but got the job done. It turned out they only needed that one exciting goal in a 1-0 victory after a double overtime win the game before. Edwards now has seven goals in 11 games this season with four assists giving her 18 points as she is tied for 30th in points per game in all of women’s college soccer.

Edwards has been one of the best players on her team since she was just a kid, including in high school. When Edwards was a junior in his high school, she approached her coach with a request to move from midfield to a forward position. The move turned out to be a great decision for the team and Edwards. She went on to have 18 goals and 17 assists in her senior season. That was enough to get the Washington native a scholarship at Mountain West Conference school, New Mexico.

Edwards talked about her decision to join New Mexico stating, “The coach there, Heather Dyche was a huge part of my decision. She’s been an assistant coach for (United States) national teams, she knows the highest level and that’s a perfect fit for me.”

The fit at the University of New Mexico has indeed been perfect for Edwards. Her freshman season she appeared in all 21 games for the Lobos and started in nine of them. She scored three goals and had two assists that year. In her sophomore season she led the team in points with 18. That year earned her rankings of sixth in points and ninth in assists in the Mountain West Conference. Her junior year was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but she tallied three goals and three assists in that season. Now, in her senior season she already has tied her career best of 18 points in a season about halfway through the year. Edwards was named Mountain West Conference player of the week in a two-game stretch where she recorded a hat trick and followed it up by dishing out the game winning assist.

After a tremendous start to the season for Edwards and the Lobos, the sky is the limit. Edwards has her sights on a Mountain West Conference championship as well as a deep run in the NCAA tournament, not to mention, player of the year recognition in the Mountain West Conference.
