For Webster University men’s soccer coach Mike Siener, sports have been prevalent his whole life

ST. LOUIS — Webster’s men’s soccer team is on a roll as of late, having won nine games in a row. From the start of the season, head coach Mike Siener has said that he’s been impressed with the team’s attitude and how they all seem to work together to achieve a common goal.

After a historic, yet odd regular season in 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Webster won the conference championship and looks primed to try and defend their title and go for a repeat.

On Oct. 6, Siener picked up his 100th career win as soccer coach with the Gorloks’ 4-0 road win against the Blue Jays of Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. Three days later, Siener would eclipse that mark with Webster’s ninth consecutive win.

In addition to a long career in coaching that goes all the way back to 2000, he has quite an impressive resume as an athlete too.

A Webster graduate himself, Siener was a four-sport athlete in college. He first went to Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri before transferring to Webster, where he would earn two degrees.

While in college, Siener played baseball for a year, and basketball, soccer, and tennis for three years. He was part of the 2001 Webster men’s soccer team that has the school record for most wins in a single season. That team went 16-1-2 during the regular season, with Siener leading the way in many categories and setting some records in the process.

He led the team with nine goals, five assists, and 23 total points during that season, which is the most points any Webster men’s soccer player has scored in a single season. His nine goals also set a record for a single season.

Siener also set records in career goals and career points, with 14 and 41, respectively. He averaged 0.87 points per game, 0.28 assists per game and 0.30 goals per game. He did all this in a total of just 47 games.

Siener’s coaching and playing careers are somewhat intertwined, as he joined Webster’s basketball staff in 2000 and served as a part of that staff up until 2011, taking on several different roles. The men’s basketball team captured five St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles.

Siener also served as the head coach for men’s and women’s tennis, where he would win the coach of the year award four times, before becoming the men’s soccer coach and receiving the honor again, making him the only coach in school history to be named coach of the year in three different sports.

And now with his 100th career win, Siener ranks among the best coaches in school history, with more sure to come, with Webster gunning for yet another conference championship.
