The University of Texas’ kicker and punter, Cameron Dicker, earns his nickname

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Longhorns have a secret weapon. That weapon is the 6-foot-1, 216-pound senior kicker/punter Cameron Dicker. Cameron has earned the moniker or nickname, “Dicker the Kicker,” after kicking the winning field goal against rival, the University of Oklahoma, in the last seconds of the Red River Showdown in 2018.  He was excitedly picked up by his teammates on the field after the win, and “Dicker the Kicker” was born.

Cameron Dicker was a kicker and punter for Lake Travis High School. He was ranked the No. 4 kicker nationally in 2017. When Texas recruited him, they needed an outstanding kicker. Dicker did not disappoint. He played in all 14 games his freshman year, and he led the team with 105 points, the most ever scored by a Longhorn freshman. He scored 18 field goals out of 25 attempts, and his average kickoff was 64.5 yards. He was nominated for the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year.

In 2019 as a sophomore, Dicker led Texas with 98 points, scoring on 14 of 18 field goal attempts and 56 of 57 extra points. Against Rice University, Cameron scored a 57-yard field goal, tying a University of Texas record made by Jeff Ward against Texas A&M in 1985. He is the only player in UT football history to convert multiple game-winning walk-off plays as time expired.

As a junior in 2020, Dicker added punting to his kicking duties. He scored 15 of 21 field goal attempts, 50 of 51 extra points and 61 touchbacks on 73 kickoffs. He also punted the ball for 349 yards.

This season so far, Cameron is at 71.4% on field goals (five of seven attempts), he has scored 25 of 25 extra points, and his longest field goal is 40 yards. “Dicker the Kicker” has a promising future in the NFL if he keeps up his amazing stats the rest of this season. NFL scouts are always looking for kickers with a high level of accuracy and repetition. Considering his record-tying 57-yard field goal against Rice in 2019, he also kicks the ball with extreme momentum and power.

Some highlights of Dicker’s glorious career so far with the Longhorns are:  he has scored the sixth most points in Texas football history; this season he was selected to the 2021 Lou Groza Award preseason watchlist; he is nominated for the National Football Foundation Campbell Trophy; he is a two-time All Big 12 selection; he kicked 18 field goals in 2018, the most ever by a UT freshman; and he is a five-time academic member of the Big 12 Commissioner Honor Roll.

“Dicker the Kicker” has a leg that can drive him straight into the NFL. The rest of the 2021-22 football season will only enhance his future opportunities.  His nickname has been well earned, time will tell if it follows him into the NFL.
