Cavaliers Cricket Club, Regina: The genesis and future of cricket in Saskatchewan

REGINA, Saskatchewan — The Cavaliers Cricket Club is a cricket club based in Regina, Saskatchewan. In the last 38 years, the Club has been at the forefront of developing the game of cricket in Regina and, by extension, in Saskatchewan.

Established in 1983, the Club is the oldest cricket club in Regina. Although it halted its operations in the early 2000’s, it resumed operation in 2010 and, since then, has remained open as one of the best cricket clubs in Canada.

On June 11, 2011, just about a year after their reopening, the Club started extending the game of cricket to other cities. One of the first cities they went to was the city of Yorkton. Members from the Cavalier Club went to the town on an invitation by Stephanie Lockhart, the then Urban Sports Coordinator, to help develop cricket among the community members.

Today, the history of cricket in the city of Yorkton will not be complete without mentioning the contributions of the Cavaliers Cricket Club towards the development of the game of cricket in that city.

“Believe it or not, cricket is the second largest team sport in the world behind soccer,” said Nauth Ramoo, the Cavaliers Cricket Club captain, during the 2011 visit to Yorkton. One of the cricket clubs in Yorkton is the Yorkton Yorkers, established in 2013. It is one of the results of the Cavaliers’ 2011 visit.

The year 2014 was a big breakthrough year for the Cavaliers. In the pursuit of excellence in the game of cricket, the Club purchased a new state-of-the-art bowling machine as far back as 2014 to help improve the training sessions of members of the team. They were the first cricket club to own such a machine in the whole of Saskatchewan. Its purpose was to help coaches improve the team’s batsmen.

That same year, they became the first team in Saskatchewan to enter the T20 League. The Cavaliers ICE and the Cavaliers FIRE were the two teams submitted by the Cavalier Cricket Club to compete in the 2014 T20 season. When it comes to cricket, the Cavaliers strive to be the very best.

Richard Singh, who has been with the Club since the 80’s, was elected the Club President for the 2014 season.

On May 17, 2014, they kicked off the ODP season in a game against Midway CC. Douglas Park became the first place where they recorded their first ODP win. The game ended with 10-wickets in favor of the Cavaliers.

In August, they made the Saskatchewan Cricket ODP League playoffs after four attempts. They defeated the Regina Royal Cricket Club to make the playoffs. This was their first playoff appearance since their re-establishment in 2010. They were also eight games undefeated in the regular league before making the playoffs. On September 20, they made the final of the ODP for the first time after defeating the Knight Riders in the semifinals.

The year 2017 was the beginning of silverware for the Cavaliers. After defeating the United Cricket Club in the maiden T20, the Cavaliers ICE was crowned the Regina Champions. That same year, they also emerged the Provincial T20 Champions after they defeated Warriors Cricket Club.

The Cavaliers made the most of their time in the 2017 T20 League. They played 14 games and won all of them. In the ODP, they played nine games, won six, and lost only three thanks to the leadership of Captain TJ Singh and other hard-working Cavalier players.

Aside from being the first cricket club in Saskatchewan, they are the first and only cricket club in the province, and maybe the whole of Canada, with seven nationals on their team. In addition, they are the first team to start offering cricket lessons to kids of all ages and the first Regina team to broadcast a cricket game on TV. They are also the first cricket club from Saskatchewan to own a private cricket field and the first Saskatchewan team to buy a bowling machine. The list continues.

Indeed, the Cavaliers Cricket Club is a pacesetter. It is unmistakably the future of cricket in Saskatchewan.
