Generational talent Jerry McClure continues to pile up scholarship offers

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Mater Dei Catholic’s superstar wide receiver, Jerry McClure, has garnered serious attention from some of the biggest schools in the nation. After making the junior varsity team during his freshman year, he was quickly promoted to the varsity squad. As a sophomore, he was originally given a starting role at the defensive back position. McClure continued to impress his coaches, displaying his raw talent and skillset, while sprinkling in at running back and returning kickoffs.

Now as a junior, he has found a home at the wide receiver position. His experience at defensive back and his awareness of defensive schemes has translated to success in creating separation and making big plays. In Mater Dei’s 2021 season opener, McClure exploded for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Shortly after his remarkable performance, the University of Southern California (USC) presented him with a scholarship offer. Within the same week, he received offers from both Michigan and Arizona. McClure currently has offers to play on both sides of the ball, as he received an offer to play defensive back for San Diego State during his sophomore season. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound phenomenon has been contacted by Ohio State, UCLA and Cal, who are all eager to add the three-star recruit to their programs.

Listed as the No. 23 best player in the state of California, McClure has rapidly become one of the most exciting prospects of the Class of 2023. According to 24/7Sports, he is the No. 36 wide receiver in the nation. At a recent Makasi Exposure Camp event, McClure displayed his sheer explosiveness, running an unofficial 4.48 second 40-yard dash time. The evidence indicates that McClure is a generational talent, who seems primed for a prominent professional career.

This season, McClure focused his efforts on improving his route running tree. He spends his free time studying separation and release techniques and watching film of NFL superstars Tyreek Hill, Odell Beckham Jr. and Justin Jefferson. McClure confidently named Denver Broncos’ wide receiver, Jerry Judy, as his professional idol. Notice that McClure admires Judy, the all-business, sure-handed Alabama graduate, in favor of a flashy veteran, such as DeAndre Hopkins. McClure is as dedicated as they come, and is simply put, here to win your team games. It’s quite reassuring to hear that such a young player is capable and willing to pinpoint the area in his game that needs some work. His willingness to improve and learn from some of the best receivers in the game is a very encouraging sign.

McClure is becoming a better player with each passing day and continues to torch secondaries throughout the San Diego region. With Mater Dei poised to make a run for the state championship, expect McClure to be an offensive focal point for the Crusaders. It’s easy to predict that the highly recruited wide receiver will attain several more offers as the season progresses. McClure certainly doesn’t lack the size or speed to succeed at the collegiate level and has clearly displayed his big play threat capabilities.
