Where are they now?: Wheat Ridge High School legend Dave Logan

WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. (BVM) — Dave Logan excelled as a three-sport star for Wheat Ridge High School from 1969-72. But football would become the sport where Logan would truly make a name for himself, and he continues to leave his mark to this day.

Logan’s career in football — which now spans more than five decades — began to take off after he graduated from Wheat Ridge in 1972. An all-state performer in football, basketball and baseball, Logan took his talents to the next level at the University of Colorado after declining an offer to play baseball for the Cincinnati Reds, who selected him in the 19th round of the 1972 draft. He went on to become a star for the CU football and basketball teams and in 1976 he became only the third athlete, along with Mickey McCarty and baseball Hall of Famer Dave Winfield, to be drafted in three sports when the NBA’s Kansas City Kings picked him in the ninth round and the NFL’s Cleveland Browns selected him in the third round.

After choosing to play football professionally, Logan would thrive during an eight-year run with the Browns (1976-83), hauling in 262 passes for 4,247 yards and 24 touchdowns before being traded to the Denver Broncos in 1984 and finishing his NFL career back in his home state.

Logan’s football-playing days ended in 1984, but he’s remained heavily involved in the sport. He joined the Denver Broncos as a radio color analyst in 1990 before becoming “the voice of Denver Broncos football” in 1996 when he shifted over to being the team’s play-by-play man.

In addition to his radio role with the Broncos, a job he still holds, Logan has carved out an impressive career as a high school football coach in Colorado. He’s won 290 games and nine state titles in 28 seasons split between four schools: Arvada West, Chatfield, Mullen and Cherry Creek. Last fall, he led Cherry Creek to an unbeaten season and its second straight Class 5A state title.

A Class of 2000 inductee into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, Logan was also recognized for his wide-ranging impact at the high school level in July when he was inducted into the National Federation of State High School Associations Hall of Fame.
