Ontario Hockey Academy a great opportunity for future top players

CORNWALL, Ontario – Once known as the “armpit of Ontario,” Cornwall has moved on from that odorous moniker and is now more proudly known as the home of one of the best hockey academies in the world. The mill factories have been replaced by hockey arenas.

Ontario Hockey Academy (OHA)

Founded in 2007, the Ontario Hockey Academy (OHA) is a private school that offers students from around the world and Canada, a secondary school diploma issued by the Ontario Ministry of Education and a full hockey program for boys and girls from grade nine to post graduate.

The boys program includes five teams: prep, varsity, U18 AAA, junior varsity U17, U15 AAA

The girl’s program at OHA is the only residential school that ices three teams that compete at an elite level.

The OHA Mavericks practice at the Benson Centre and the Civic Complex, two state-of-the-art hockey facilities that also host prestigious, international hockey tournaments.

Ontario Hockey Academy teams are Hockey Canada sanctioned and OHA is registered as a Hockey Canada Residential Sports School. The OHA Major Midget AAA teams play in the Central Junior Midget Hockey League.

The U18 Boys’ Junior Prep team play 50-plus games in showcases and tournaments, predominately in the United States, and the Midget AA team plays in the HEOAA league.

The OHA’s mission is simple: to guide its students into a successful tomorrow whether that’s on the ice or in the real world.

The OHA campus

Situated along the St. Lawrence River, blanketed by the Adirondack Mountains to the south and the Laurentian Mountains to the east, Cornwall, Ontario is as picturesque a place to live in as one can find.

The OHA’s newly renovated campus on Vincent Massey, includes 26 dorm style rooms, a fully-stocked cafeteria and a hockey specific off-ice training facility.

The neighborhood has some of the best bike lanes in the province

Girls and boys are divided into two different wings at OHA, sharing a common room with TV/DVD equipment, lounge furniture, laundry facilities, computer stations, and areas for making light snacks. All rooms have access to the campus Wi-Fi but rooms do not have cable TV.

The Academy is within a five-hour drive to over twenty-one NCAA DI schools, twenty-four NCAA DIII schools, and thirteen Canadian women’s hockey teams.

The OHA is the only school in Ontario, Quebec, and Eastern Canada accredited with the Ontario Ministry of Education that plays in a sanctioned AAA HOCKEY league.

The OHA in 2021

Like most athletic organizations or leagues (pro, amateur or high school level), the COVID-19 pandemic has had a serious effect on the OHA schedule these last two years.

With all health protocols adhered to–parents, students, athletes and fans all notified about safety restrictions–the Ontario Hockey Academy recently announced that all five of the boys teams–after a tough, competitive training camp–have been selected and they are back in league and tournament play for the first time since the middle of March of 2020.

The season is in full bloom for the Mavericks, and everyone seems elated to be back at the rink playing the game that they love.

The next generation of OHA graduates are on their way.
