Katie Cranston proving her golfing prowess with Team Ontario

OAKVILLE, Ontario — It only took an eight-week summer golf camp for Katie Cranston to fall in love with golf. The Oakville native, who is also part of the Junior Girls Squad for Team Ontario, continues to prove herself to be ready to play with the best.

Cranston’s notable accomplishments include winning the 2020 Ontario Junior (U19) Girls Championship, second place in the 2020 Canadian Junior Girls Championship, being a Team Ontario athlete for the 2019-20 season and being a member of the 2021 Olympic squad.

Alongside individual accomplishments, she is now training with Team Canada to join the US Amateur Four-Ball Tournament, a tournament played in pairs, in the upcoming year.

Cranston had tried many sports before she realized her passion for golf. “Growing up and in middle school, I played every single sport my school offered,” Cranston stated according to Golf Canada’s website.

When her school brought in a golf program, Cranston wanted to give it a try. “I asked my mom if I could do this as well,” she said. “And she said yes. She would buy me the golf clubs if I used them in the summer. And so I did about eight weeks of summer golf camp and I’ve just loved it ever since!”

The Oakville teen golf star won the Ontario Juvenile (U17) and Junior (U19) Girls Championship titles in 2020 while she was reading Catcher in the Rye for school. Successfully balancing her school workload and golf career, Cranston got a golf scholarship at Auburn University in Alabama.

In an interview with Golf Ontario, Cranston was asked about playing golf in the future. “I definitely think it’s something I can pursue to hopefully make the LPGA someday,” she said.

Cranston’s aspirations require hard work and determination. Luckily, the difficulty of these tasks is an aspect she finds refreshing about golf. “I find golf a lot more interesting than other sports I’ve played,” she said. “I feel like every day there’s something new and you play a different course every week. It’s an interesting and fun sport because it’s not as easily mastered, so it never gets old for me!”

It is clear that Cranston is not hesitant to take on challenges. At the 2020 US Women’s Amateur Championship at Westchester Golf Club, where she competed against older and more experienced golfers, she completed the tournament by passing the elimination tournament and even making it to the round of 16.

One of her recent challenges was both difficult and fun since she reunited with her good friend, Nicole Gal, another Oakville Golf Club member who has a history of competing against Cranston, as a team in a Four-Ball Tournament at Quail Ridge in Boynton Beach, Florida.

On Sept. 30, 2021, the Oakville golf duo prevailed against other teams with a score of 66, qualifying for the upcoming US Amateur Four-Ball Tournament in Puerto Rico in April next year.

Cranston and Gal will be training with Team Canada for the Four-Ball Tournament. It will be very exciting to see two of Oakville’s golf superstars working together again.
