Nicole Gal showcases her golf talent at Junior Girls Championship

OAKVILLE, Ontario — Oakville has a 16-year-old teen golf superstar named Nicole Gal who joins a list of Canadian golfers to have won the Canadian Junior Girls Championship. Winning both the Junior and Juvenile title in the 66th Canadian Junior Girls Championship, Gal had a breakout year in 2020.

Starting her golf career in the Oakville Golf Club, Gal stated that her passion for the sport started way earlier. “My dad and grandpa brought me to a driving range when I was 4 and I loved it ever since,” she said in a statement on Golf Canada’s webpage.

She is currently a member of Team Canada National Junior Squad and qualified to compete in major all ages tournaments. Of course, this set of notable accomplishments didn’t come easy. Gal missed the cut to be qualified to the Canadian Junior Girls Championship in 2019 prior to her breakout year, 2020.

In an interview with Oakville News, Gal commented on her progress. “I’m really proud of myself for all the hard work I’ve put in the last couple of years to be standing here where I am,” she said.

According to an interview with CHCH TV, she lives five minutes away from the Oakville Golf Club where she practices every day.

It was no surprise that her hard work paid off. “I’ve been doing a lot of strength training to get more muscle and power,” she said. “I’ve also been doing a lot of yoga and stretching to get more flexible.”

Her training doesn’t stop there. Gal combined her physical training with a mental training program designed for golfers called VISION54.

Gal proved that she could take up challenges following her Canadian Junior Girls Championship title. She completed the Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship in Edmonton with second place, competing against more experienced golfers. She very nearly won the tournament, moving up five places on the last day.

Even though Gal has a year left to graduate high school, she already received a golf scholarship from Ole Miss (University of Mississippi).

Prior to her Junior Girls Championship title, Gal had achievements at the regional level. In the 2020 Ontario Girls Championship, she was playing against another Oakville resident and her good friend, Katie Cranston, who scored the first place in the tournament.

In an article about Gal and Cranston’s achievements on Oakville News, Gal stated, “I also was lucky to play with my best friend, so we kept each other smiling and I think that was a big factor for today.”

Gal and Cranston had various encounters in both regional and national tournaments, so it was exciting to see them teaming up for the Four-Ball Tournament at Quail Ridge in Boynton Beach Florida in Sept. 2021. The Oakville Golf was qualified for the US Women’s Amateur Four Ball tournament to be held in Puerto Rico in April next year.
