Manitoba Bisons football looks to add to rich history

WINNIPEG, Manitoba – A strong and good team is all about unity and understanding and this is the foundation of the Manitoba Bisons football team. The Manitoba Bisons football team is now welcoming 2021 with high expectations. Des Catellier, a fifth-year quarterback, is set to lead the team with his role as captain. The team will start a fresh journey with their coaching staff this year as every player works to perform at their best.

The Manitoba Bisons football team owns numerous Canadian university championships. Under CIS football, only three clubs have won the Vanier Cup in back-to-back years. The Manitoba Bisons are one of those three teams and they earned them in 1969 and 1970.

After a long wait in 2007, the team won that Vanier Cup title as the national champions in Canadian Interuniversity football once again. The team is now standing with three Vanier Cup national championships and 11 Hardy Trophy conference championships under the able leadership of their head coach Brian Dobie.

Another achievement of Manitoba Bisons includes David Onyemata’s selection into the NFL in 2016. He was the first Bison selected an NFL draft when he was selected in the fourth round (No. 120 overall) by the New Orleans Saints. He is still on the Saints’ active roster in his fifth season.

Coach Dobie started his journey as a member of the Manitoba Bisons on the 1973 Churchill Bowl squad, and he has been their head coach since 1996. He has the most wins in the history of Bisons football, with a Canada West regular season record of 96-92-1, and he also made the postseason record of 12-13.

Dobie has won five Canada West coach of the year in consecutive years from 1999-2002.

In the 2021 season, he had entered the 47th year of his coaching after being the head coach for more than 20 years at the Churchill High School in Winnipeg. Also, he has been the guest coach in countless professional camps over the past 20 years. In the year 2001, he was also named the U Sports coach of the year.

He has always stood against discriminations as he said, “You can go to any university in Canada and it doesn’t matter about your gender, about your race, about your age, about anything.”

The football team is looking for more achievements in upcoming years. In their last game against the Calgary Dinos in the Hardy Cup semifinals, the Bisons lost with a 47-46 score.
